Lest we Forget

For the second year, WCB provided the music for the ANZAC Day dawn service at Manly Dam with Vaughan Price playing the Last Post and Reveille. More than 2000 people attended the dawn service to honour those who have served their country in all theatres in all wars.
In the darkness, with only the occasional kookaburra’s call to break the solemnity, the gathering commemorated the nation’s servicemen and women.
WCB supports a number of community based events through the year, none as import and significant as ANZAC Day.

Australian Band Championships 2008

Both Warringah Concert Brass and Warringah Youth Brass came home with some great results from the 2008 National Championships.

After being promoted to Junior B Grade Warringah Youth Brass came home as the 2008 Junior B Grade Champions. This is a fantastic effort and all credit must go to the music director John Saunders and his fine band of young players as well as a fantastic supporters group of family and friends. The Youth band was up against some stiff competition of much older players and finished the day on equal points with Boroondara Youth Brass. The championship went to Warringah Youth Brass as they gained higher points in the set test piece.

Warringah Concert Brass competed in Open A Grade for the second year and recorded a fantastic score to bring them in at 7th place against what was reported to be the toughest field in A Grade to date. The band had a fantastic first day finishing the day with equal points to Brisbane Excelsior who ultimately took out the championship. WCB is now on the springboard to bigger and better things in future years.

The Solo competition saw some great results from both the junior and senior bands.

Most outstanding results on the day included
Ali Graham Open Percussion Champion
Matthew Hurditch Junior Euphonium Champion
Jeremy Lloyd 2nd Junior Baritone

Congratulations to all who competed on the day.

WCB does it again!!!!

On Sunday 25th November, WCB won the Grand Final of the NSW Battle of the Bands for the fourth year in a row.

This year the band lifted their game even higher than previous years.

Deputy Music Director, Darren Cole led the band for the second year to a convincing victory over the five other finalists.

A combination of choice of music, choreography, comedy, singing, visual presentation and great playing sealed the win.

The adjudicator for the Grand Final, Matthew Van Emmerik commented that if points were awarded for the contest, which they were not, Warringah would have been up to 12 points ahead of the next band.

WCB is looking forward to next years competition! It would be great to see more A grade bands form NSW enter next year!

IN MEMORIAM

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Malcolm
Johnston after a two and a half year battle against an illness that he
fought so courageously.

Malcolm passed away Monday morning 12th November 2007.

Following the announcement in rehearsal, the band played the hymn “In Perfect Peace” as a tribute and in honour of Malcolm.

Malcolm has been a member of WCB for several years and has been a faithful member of the cornet section up until his recent hospitalisation.

Malcolm’s brass playing days started in the early 1960’s with the Burwood Municipal band under Albert Baille. He also played solo cornet with Campbelltown Brass Band.

Not restricted to brass bands, Malcolm also excercised his talents in such groups as the Pro Musica Choir at Sydney University, Joy Yates Jubilation Choir, the Warringah Choir and playing trumpet and vocals with the Campbelltown Theatre Group Gilbert and Sullivan productions

In Malcolm’s High School teaching days he often helped out with School bands and giving coaching to young brass players.

During the 80’s and 90’s Malcolm played trumpet with the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra and took on a dual role in the Harbord Diggers Big Band on vocals and trumpet. While in Finland for 6 months in 2000, Malcolm played trumpet in the Turku Fire Brigade Band.

All the members of Warringah Concert Brass offer their thoughts, prayers and support to Rosemary and the family at this difficult time.
