Oktoberfest

Saturday 13th October saw an ensemble of 12 players from WCB celebrating Oktoberfest at Dee Why RSL.

With lots of Bavarian food and amber ale flowing, the receptive crowd swayed to the authentic sounds of the Warringah OOM PAH PAH Band.

The frauleins and lederhosen clad lads of the band delighted the crowd with such Bavarian favourites as, Roll out the Barrel, Dad’s Army and I Still Call Australia Home.

John Saunders’ microphone announcements complete with German accent fooled no-one, including himself.

Sacred Item: Holy Holy Holy, John Bacchus Dykes, arr James Curnow
A great effort by this very young band. Well done conductor for a very musical reading. These are good sounds by anyone's standards. Special mention goes to flugel, sop and bass trombone. Intonation good throughout.

Own Choice: Dimensions, Peter Graham
Not the best start but they soon get right into it, enjoying every minute. Good stuff. Well done solo cornet and euphonium. There are some special moments in the slow passages. Euph is a star and soprano still sings over the band. What can we say - these youngsters could teach yesterdays bands more than just a thing or two about intonation and ensemble skills. An uplifting performance.

Concert Item: Jubilation, Fantasy on American spirituals, James Curnow
Just sat back and enjoyed this, as we hear all the parts come through. Well done back row cornets. Some delicate touches in the slow movements. Again intonation can not be faulted. Band once again enjoying every moment and it is coming through your music. Well done band once again. There is so much potential here and for us, this was one of the real highlights of the weekend so far.

Professor David King Inspires WCB

With the lead up the 2007 NSW State Band Championships, WCB was thrilled to be given a four hour master class by Prof David King.

Acknowledged as one of the finest Music Directors in the world today, Prof King gave WCB Music Director, John Saunders and the band a night a superb tuition, inspiration and encouragement that will not be forgotten by those in attendance for a long time to come.

Concentration was at an all time high with the band hanging off every word spoken by David.

WCB is thankful to Prof King for the time and talents he gave so freely to inspire and encourage the group.
