Hunter Regional Band Association - East Coast Australian Band Championship and the Festival of the Bands WINNERS FOR 2006
Congratulations to the players of Warringah for a convincing win in both the Test Section and Entertainment portions of the East Coast Championships today! It was a fabulous contest and it was wonderful to be playing to a packed (and enthusiastic!) audience.
It was a great day and all bands who took part should be congratulated for their efforts. Special mention should be made to the amazing team of people who were responsible for the smooth running of the events of the day, particularly with the stage set up. Thank you!

Warringah Concert Brass - Runners up at 2006 National B grade Championships
During Easter 2006, WCB travelled to Brisbane to compete at the Australian National Brass Band Championships.
WCB went into the competition as one of the forerunners to win the B grade title. A brilliant performance by Cairns Brass saw them take the B Grade Championship for 2006 with WCB being the runners up.
Congratulations to Cairns Brass for winning the title in fine form.
WCB won the Hymn section of the contest with a score of 49 points out if 50, the highest score for a hymn across all grades.
Below is a retrospective report written and published by 4barsrest downunder.

Warringah Concert Brass
Warringah Concert Brass, conducted by John Saunders, were placed Second in B Grade for 2006. They had the highest points for the Hymn (the highest for the weekend) and achieved an aggregate score of 478.
Warringah's Hymn was Just as I am (Heaton) and this began with a secure opening from the cornet. The trombones were beautiful, and solo cornets sounded as one with matched tone and style. Dynamic contrasts were outstanding and tenor horns leading into the final verse were superb. The sostenuto style in the last verse was glorious and the band played with excellent control to the end. Percussion was sensitive, and this was visually apparent from the facial expressions of the snare drummer!
The introduction of the Test was excellent from trombones and shot quavers from cornets were decisive and tight. Terrific cornet cadenza and solo cornet, tenor horn and soprano worked well together. There was exciting work from the cornets on semiquavers and the band rounded out the first movement with very tightly played crotchets. There was lovely sustained playing in the elegy, with particularly good work from the vibraphone and broken chord quaver accompaniment. There were impeccable moments from euphonium, soprano and trombone, and the build up towards the end was smooth and controlled. In the finale, the band was tight and precise, and particularly effective before U. There was tremendous quaver work at CC and the band built to an exciting conclusion. Bravo to the little guy on bass trombone!
Essence of Time (Graham) was the band's Own Choice selection. This was a bold selection for B Grade, but proved to be an ideal one for the band. The piece opened with a gorgeous sound and excellent attention to dynamics and articulation. Tubas were very nice in the early stages, and there was some electric ensemble playing. Tenor horn was lyrical. Percussion is never over-the-top – just right and tastefully done. The band has a big balanced sound when playing full passages. This was a measured and well controlled performance enabling the musicians to give their best. The finale gave shivers (and it wasn't just the air conditioning). This band has a mature, rich sound. Bravo tubas!
The band's Stage March choice was Castell Coch (Powell), and again the dynamic contrast was superb. The band achieved a full sound without harshness or over-blowing. The bell tones were highly effective and the trio was very enjoyable.
Warringah is definitely at the upper end of B Grade, demonstrating a richness of tone and technical facility to match many A Grade bands.

Warringah Youth First Place in Junior C Grade at 2006 Nationals
Hello everybody,
I just wanted to thank the cheer squad in the audience at Junior C. It was awesome to walk out on stage and here seniors like Stacey and Bec among many others cheering us on. That was very encouraging. To the parents, thank you so much for having such enthusiasm for all the children and supporting them so greatly. This year was unbelievable for the juniors and to be able to share it with so many others was very special.
Congratulations once again Junior C Grade National Champions, i.e WARRINGAH YOUTH BRASS!!!!!!! you have done a fantastic job. We didn't only succeed in making John smile once or twice this year, but the entire way through, especially on the second day!!!!!!! Well done!!!!!!!!
Cheers,
Grandma
"Warringah Youth Brass scored their first contest victory in more than a decade when taking out the National Junior C Grade Championship.
Winning in all sections except the hymn, conductor John Saunders said the success was a fitting send off for several players who were too old for youth band. And he lamented the fact that only five junior bands had entered the Nationals this year.
John called on the National Band Council and State associations to address the low number of youth brass bands perhaps put in place incentives to improve the situation."
